It starts with the earth, with the bones that rest beneath the surface, and it ends the same way. Somewhere in between is the garden.
When Sara discovers the garden, hidden deep in the Yorkshire moors, it seems impossible. A stark contrast to the January moorland at its border. Summer that never ceases, flowers that never fade, and colours she could never have imagined. Eden of the fells. Paradise.
But there is the woman that creeps strange among the vines, ever watching and afraid. There are the people going missing from the village, last seen ranting about flowers. There is the smell of rot in the undergrowth that Sara can’t quite seem to shake. As she is pulled into the tangles of the garden, and the life of the strange sallow-eyed woman, she learns just how deep roots can run.
The Garden is Maya Sharp’s first novel. It will be published on 18 September.
